First Baptist Church of Philadelphia, 123 South 17th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103
(Corner of 17th and Sansom Streets)
"Come and see." Thank you for visiting First Baptist Church of Philadelphia’s newly designed website. Our church has a musical, mission, and preaching legacy that dates back to 1698. Escaping political and religious persecution in England, our founding fathers and mothers were later swept by the revolutionary fervor of those who shaped our democracy and framed our constitution just a few blocks away from where we worship. In fact, our Baptist governmental tradition prides itself in our freedom to be governed by collaboration rather than coercion.

Our beautiful Byzantine sanctuary situated on the corner of 17th Street and Sansom in Center City Philadelphia is a historic landmark. But please, don’t think this archival monument is merely one of hundreds of museums pieces sitting without life throughout our city. Within these walls, beautifully adorned with breathtaking stained glass windows are mahogany pews is a congregation alive and well!

First Baptist Church of Philadelphia, under the pastor-ship of the Rev. Dr. Gerardo James de Jesus continues the musical legacy, mission, and preaching of our forefathers and mothers. Visit us, and you’ll not only hear the classics of Mozart, Bach, and Isaac Watts, but the sounds of gospel, jazz, country, folk, Latin, and spirituals! Whereas in the 19th century our church was on a mission, partnering with forces that sought abolition for the slave, woman’s suffrage, and civil rights, today we care for the homeless, advocate for the poor, demand justice for the marginalized, and inclusive of all people! Our desire is to be committed to being in relationship in order to create a genuine community of faith.

The preaching, teaching, and counseling ministry of our pastor inspires, empowers, and moves us to discover the best in us; many who are not from traditional Christian backgrounds find in Pastor Jerry’s sermons something to inspire and bring hope. His preaching connects with those seeking to know God, to believe again, to find meaning and purpose as he shares the sacred narratives of scripture in a way that provokes and challenges us to think. Pastor’s desire is that we grow in spiritual sensitivity, committed to maturity in the faith, to seek justice for the poor, and to transform into the image of our Christ.

Please browse though our website. You’ll quickly notice how God is at work among us to make us God’s hands, feet, eyes, ears, mouth, presence and touch. We’re convinced that God comes to us in one another. All are welcomed at God’s table!
